CLOSED SEASON SHRIMPERS NETTED IN BARATARIA BAY

On August 10, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited two men for allegedly shrimping during closed season.  Ryan Anthony Kreger, 23, of New Orleans, and Jason Rodriguez, 29, of Harahan, were seen in Barataria Bay in Jefferson Parish aboard the boat "Capt. Ryan" with skimmer frames in the water. As agents approached the boat, Kreger quickly lifted his nets from the water and attempted to flee.  Kreeger and Rodriguez were seen throwing five baskets of shrimp over the sides of the boat.

After a short but dangerous chase, agents stopped Kreger and informed him and his deckhand they would be cited for allegedly using skimmers during closed season and for careless operation of the vessel. Agents also measured the gear being used and issued a citation for using oversize nets. The season in Zone 2, which includes Barataria Bay, closed on June 20, and is set to open on August 11, at 6:00 a.m. Kreger was also issued a civil citation for operating without running lights.

The penalty for using skimmers in a closed season and using oversize skimmers includes fines of up to $1250, up to 210 days in jail, or both, and forfeiture of anything seized, plus court costs. The penalty for careless operation carries a fine of not more than $300, jail not more than 30 days, or both, plus court costs. The penalty for no running lights is a class one offense and constitutes a $50 fine payable to LDWF.

Agents participating in the case were Lt. Robert Martin, Sr. Agents Adam Young, David Nunez and Robert Cosse` Jr.
