Benchmark In Recognition of the Honorable Judge Edward Rubin By Sgt. Jubal Marceaux
I recently had the pleasure to interview, and as a result of, get to know better the Honorable Judge Edward Rubin. Judge Rubin is married to Burnedette, who is a retired schoolteacher, and they are the parents of three children. Lashon has three children of her own and operates a day care with her mother. Shanda is a professional tennis player who at one time was ranked sixth in the world. Edward is a senior at Louisiana State University. Our conversation began with discussing Judge Rubin’s early upbringing. He was raised in the Lafayette area. His modern-day discipline was influenced by his mother’s devotion to faith, religion, and education. He remembers as a young child being awakened by his mother to read the bible. Often these mornings were cold, and at the time, seemed hard for him to understand. However, Judge Rubin stated that he drew his strength and discipline from the experience. Judge Rubin attended Holy Rosary Catholic School until the tenth grade when he was forced to transfer to Paul Breaux High School, a public school, due to family circumstances. His last year at Holy Rosary Catholic School, he was elected “Mr. Holy Rosary.” He continued to excel in academics and graduated from high school. He then attended Southern University and graduated with a B.S. degree. Judge Rubin was accepted into the Southern University Law School and received his Juris Doctorate in 1972. His first position as a lawyer was to teach Business Law at Southern University while practicing law part time. Judge Rubin would eventually practice law full time for the next twenty years before being elected to the bench as a District Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial District. He has served in this position for the past eight and one-half years. As I have witnessed first-hand in his court, he has always ruled seriously and based on the laws and facts of the case. When asked about his feelings on wildlife laws, he voiced belief in the importance of protecting and preserving our natural resources. His first-hand knowledge, including visiting and experiencing a wildlife refuge, helped him to understand the value of these places for all of us. He understands the importance of his role as a Judge in protecting our wildlife and natural resources. He stresses the need for everyone to visit the refuges and learn to understand the importance of what we are protecting for future generations. Judge Rubin continues to be a man devoted to faith and family. On his off time, he plays tennis, reads, and enjoys working in his yard. Judge Rubin would like to someday go back to teaching, which he enjoyed in the early stages of his career. We salute Judge Edward Rubin for his dedication to the preservation of our wildlife and natural resources.
