CHURCH POINT MAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT

 On July 9, Edward Amos Perkins Jr., 23, of Church Point was arrested on a warrant from Iberia Parish for theft of over $100. His bond was set at $200,000. Perkins was arrested in Church Point by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents and booked into the Acadia Parish Jail, then transferred to the Iberia Parish Jail.Perkins' arrest stemmed from an investigation by LDWF agents from the working in conjunction with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office. On June 19, Perkins allegedly sold shrimp to a New Iberia woman in Coteau in Iberia Parish. The victim paid $350 for 100 pounds of heads-on shrimp. Perkins offered to dehead the shrimp for her, and the net after deheading was approximately 31 pounds of tails. According to a department shrimp biologists the yield should have been about 65 pounds. Authorities urge consumers to be cautious of peddlers, particularly those who offer to dehead shrimp. There have been numerous complaints of buyers being shorted when door-to-door peddlers sell shrimp, especially when offering to dehead the shrimp at no extra charge. This case is part of an ongoing investigation in which over 150 shrimp peddlers have been cited for violations of license and record keeping laws. This investigation began in early 2002 with complaints of peddlers shorting customers. Agents participating in the case are Lt. Glen Angelle, Sgt. Robert Buatt, Senior Agent Kirby Henry and Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office Detective Scott Hotard.
