Fish of the Day

By Sgt. Robert Martin

The two stealth fishermen didn’t know when they pulled away from the dock in the dark of the evening that they were about to do charity work as though they had netted a community service penalty from a judge.  They meticulously followed a routine of hiding their trail.  They were quiet and hardly noticed by anyone as they slipped through town.  They reached the fishing grounds with their contraband nets placed low in the hull of their boat and with anticipation of booting a congregation of fish rich and plentiful enough to support a multitude of people.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Madeline Taylor is a needy 87 year old and Dottie Cook is 80 years old.  On this evening, they were resting like most elderly people and anticipating tomorrow’s activities.  Who will they see, what will they do, and where will they eat?  They belong to the Council on Aging; a large parish run program, which caters to the elderly.  Daily, the council delivers meals to home bound senior citizens and provides food and organized activities at their council buildings.  Throughout the parish over 120 senior citizens depend on the council for medical well being and nourishment.  Madeline and Dottie didn’t know the men who would provide their next meal.

The four agents received information about these greedy fishermen.  So, they watched as the boat slipped silently into the water and they waited for its return the following morning.  In the dark and the fog the boat did return from across the river, and just as quietly as before, the fishermen off-loaded hundreds of pounds of fish.  Every sack and box was full as these men began their final run to jail.

The agents called the Council on Aging.  The council was very happy to hear of the windfall donation of fish and immediately sent supporters to receive and clean the fish.  The Sheriff provided help with workers and fryers.  The council gathered all the senior citizens under a tent to play games while the fish were cooked.  A meal of fish, green salad, potato salad, wheat bread, apples, and drinks was prepared and enjoyed by everyone.  Over 110 senior citizens ate that day including Madeline and Dottie, who may now go home in the evening thinking about fishermen and anticipating another good meal.
