MISSISSIPPI TURKEY POACHERS NABBED

Enforcement agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries arrested two Mississippi men on July 12, for allegedly taking a hen turkey in closed season on Old River at Deer Park.  Edward N. Johnson, 25, and Toby G. Smith, 28, both of Brookhaven, were booked at the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office in Vidalia and cited for hunting turkeys during closed season.  Sergeant John Barker and Sr. Agent Charles Ward were on afternoon boating safety patrol when they came in contact with Johnson and Smith. Agents discovered turkey feathers, a freshly cleaned turkey breast and a .22-caliber rifle in the subjects' boat.  The subjects then took the agents to a breasted-out hen turkey still floating in the upper end of Old River. Both subjects admitted Johnson had
shot the turkey from their boat earlier that afternoon.  The hen turkey and .22-caliber rifle were seized in connection with the violation.  If convicted of hunting turkeys in closed season, Johnson and Smith could each face a fine of up to $950, up to 120 days in jail, or both, plus forfeiture of anything seized. Additionally, the subjects may be required to pay $802.50 in civil restitution penalties for the turkey.
