CLOSED SEASON TRAWLER CAUGHT IN LAKE PONCHARTRAIN

Agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division cited a Jefferson Parish man for an alleged closed season trawling violation. Clifford P. Wood, 42, of Jefferson, La. was cited on July 12 after agents encountered him using a 20-foot trawl during closed shrimping season.  While on boat patrol in Lake Pontchartrain in Orleans Parish, agents saw Wood driving a vessel that appeared to be pulling a bottom trawl. After the agents stopped the vessel, they were able to confirm that Wood was using a 20-foot trawl to catch shrimp. Trawling season in Zone 1, which includes Lake Pontchartrain, had closed at 6:00 a.m. on July 7. Approximately 10 pounds of shrimp and assorted other marine life was returned to the water.  The trawl was seized and will be held as evidence until the case is adjudicated. The penalty for trawling during a closed season includes a fine of up to $750, up to 120 days in jail, or both, plus court costs and forfeiture of anything seized in connection with the violation. Agents participating in the case were Sr. Agents Eddie Skena and Jason Russo.
