PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The call came over the radio; the Sheriff's Department had reported a vessel behaving suspiciously near the chemical docks on the Mississippi River. It was circling near the docks taking pictures. We coordinated with the Sheriff's Department and the Coast Guard was contacted. In a matter of minutes, Sr. Agent Jerry Stassi and I were being locked through the locks at Port Allen and heading south. Due to earlier bad weather and ship traffic, the river was rough, but we were both pleased as to how well the new center console with a 2OO h.p. motor was handling the rough water. A short time later we were able to meet up with the suspicious vessel. The Sheriffs Department and a representative from the Coast Guard were also on the scene.

The suspicious vessel turned out to be a local photographer taking a writer from a national boating magazine on a guided trip down the Mississippi River. Needless to say, they were both a little embarrassed by the situation, but expressed their appreciation for the quick response and heads up coordination of the three agencies. After brief conversation and exchange of information and photos, the duo were allowed to continue their excursion.

This scenario, or similar ones, is being played out statewide. It's a sign of the times. As wildlife agents, we assume the responsibility of not only protecting our state’s natural resources, but also protecting the public welfare. It is imperative that we remain prepared for any and each emergency, natural or manmade, that may occur. This preparation does not happen by accident. The Department has placed emphasis on improved training and the acquisition of the best equipment possible.

I am proud to serve as the new Association President. I look forward to the Louisiana Wildlife Agents Association working with the Department to continue moving in this forward direction. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation for the confidence the agents have shown me with this responsibility. I would like to welcome the new region representatives to the board. Congratulations to the elected executive board, Sgt. Ed Broussard- Vice President, Sgt. Robert Martin-Treasurer, and Sr. Agent Remy Broussard-Secretary.
