On November 20, 2003 at 12:04 a.m. Agent Adam Young and I were patrolling the Mississippi River levee area of Port Sulphur. At this time, we heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the batture side of the levee. We proceeded to the area and noticed a car coming toward us with a spotlight shining into the adjacent woods. We moved in the direction of the vehicle and made contact with the subjects. After identifying ourselves and getting the subjects to step out of the vehicle, we noticed a loaded pump shotgun laying on the backseat and a spotlight on the front passenger seat. After a short interview with the driver, he admitted to shooting rabbits as his girlfriend shined the spotlight on them. We also questioned the passenger about her involvement in the night hunting activity. She stated that the two of them were on a date and he told her to hold the light while he shot the rabbits. She also explained to us that she was pregnant at this time. Another shotgun was found in the trunk of the subject’s car along with four freshly killed rabbits. Both subjects were charged with hunting wild quadrapeds from a moving vehicle and hunting wild quadrapeds during illegal hours with artificial light. Both charges carry a fine of $250.00 to $500.00 or jail time not more than 90 days, or both plus court costs.
