Agents Participate in the 33rd Annual New Orleans Boat Show

By  Sgt. Agent Eddie Skena

Region 8

The 33rd annual New Orleans boat show was held in the New Orleans Superdome from February 5 through February 9. The show is a five-day extravaganza displaying the latest marine products for recreational boaters. The show also hosts a variety of guests that sell and display all of the latest fishing tackle and boating equipment.

The biggest attraction this year was the Redfish holding tank. Show personnel held seminars every hour explaining the latest fishing techniques and lures for catching Redfish. The holding tank was designed so that the audience could actually see these methods being used.

National Marine Manufacturers Association is the organization that is responsible for the New Orleans boat show. This year, the NMMA signed 140 exhibitors to set up displays on the floor of the Superdome. According to Barbara Sclafani, Show Coordinator, 27,000 people attended the show this year.

Although the show was held in region eight, agents from regions seven and nine participated in the show as well. The department had agents at the show to answer questions and give information to the public concerning boating safety regulations. The agents distributed boating safety regulation manuals as well as the 2003 fishing regulations. Agents also informed the public about our department sponsored boating safety classes. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries attended the show with one goal. The promotion of safe boating. The show was an excellent opportunity to educate the public about boating regulations and to give something back to the community.
