TWO TERREBONNE MEN CITED FOR CLOSED SEASON SKIMMING

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited two men for allegedly shrimping in closed season in Terrebonne Parish. On July 2, agents watched a vessel operating without navigation lights in the Bayou Sale area of Terrebonne Parish, just after dark. The vessel then anchored for almost two hours while the agents continued to watch. After the nearly two hour wait, the boat lifted anchor and started shrimping with skimmer nets again. The season for shrimping in this area closed on June 20.  The vessel was stopped and Barell J. Billiot, 32, and David L. Williams, 42, both of Houma, were cited for skimming in closed season. The shrimp and by-catch contained in the nets were returned to the water, and two skimmer nets were seized.  Using skimmer nets in closed season is punishable by a fine of up to $750, no more than 120 days in jail, or both, plus court costs and forfeiture of anything seized.  Agents participating in the case were Lieutenant Sammy Martin and Senior Agent Max Dupre.
