I Know What You Did Last Summer By Sgt. Lane Kincaid No, it’s not the movie title from a few years ago. This is a story about what not to do on a warm summer’s night. On August 6th 2003, Sr. Agt. Darren Bruce received a complaint from Capt. Bankston concerning a deer that had been shot early that morning around 2:00 a.m. Sr. Agt. Bruce contacted Sgt. Mike Murray and Sgt. Lane Kincaid and notified them of the situation. When the agents arrived at the suspect’s residence, no one answered the loud knocks at the front door. There was a reason for this. When a person stays up all night hunting, killing, and skinning a deer, it apparently makes them deaf during their sleep. After about thirty minutes of knocking and some sore knuckles, two subjects came to the front door. The two subjects were asked if they knew why we were there. One said, because of the deer we hit with the car last night. The subject went on to explain the events. He said that they were riding around in the car, when an eight point buck ran out and struck the back right side of the car. The deer then fell into the ditch and was unable to run off due to the injuries. Out of the goodness of his heart the subject then decided to shoot the deer between the eyes with his 22 cal. Pistol. After the subjects told their- story, they were read their Miranda rights and questioned separately. Their stories almost matched except for the time that the events occurred. One subject said it occurred about 10 p.m. and the other subject said it occurred around 2 a.m. Then the vehicle that was supposed to have been hit by the deer pulled up at the house. There was damage to the back right of the vehicle but for some reason the dented area had some paint missing. The area where the paint was missing had miraculously rusted in less than 12 hrs. When confronted with this evidence the subject who had pulled the trigger spilled the beans. He stated that he and four of his friends were riding around and stopped at his friend’s house. His friend got out of the vehicle and went inside a retrieved a 22-cal. rifle. Now the hunt was on. They began riding again looking for just about anything to shoot. The first victim was an armadillo. The second and last victim was a drive by shooting of an eight point buck. The deer was then loaded into the trunk and taken back to the friend’s house. The deer was skinned in the back yard of the residence and the meat was stored in the freezer. Five subjects were involved in this night hunting adventure and all were charged accordingly. A Stevens 22 cal. rifle and an eight point buck was seized in the investigation. There is no doubt it would have been cheaper for the gang to rent four or five movies to pass the time away instead of going night hunting.
